Christmas Eve 2015

Bethlehem shepherds were the first ones to hear the good news of Christmas from the angels – that a savior had been born in Bethlehem.  And after they heard the message their first reaction was, “Let’s go.”  They didn’t say, “We’ve never done this before,” or “Let’s wait and see if anyone else is going first,” or “Maybe we should consider the risks and liabilities of leaving the flocks before we go.”  They just went with little regard for themselves or their safety; they did not let fear hold them back. They just knew they had to go see.  And after they had seen the baby they returned to their homes praising God and on the way they told everyone they met what they had seen and heard.

There are no one-letter words allowed in Scrabble.  BUT if there were, you’d have three choices.  Obvious one is the pronoun “I.”  Second one would be the indefinite article “A”.  The third one is the letter “O”.   It’s an interjection.  Which is a word or phrase we throw into our speech to express emotion.

It’s hard to ignore the message of this weekend.  It is coming at us from all sides almost 24/7.  It’s a tempting message that some try to resist but most fall as easy prey.  The message is SHOP and BUY.  Did you see the newspaper on Thursday?  It was like 2 inches thick.  Stores and retailers are ready for us with low prices and once a year savings!  They have figured out when and where and how we like to spend our money and they will stay open as long we are willing to shop and buy.  The whole weekend has been named for our national shopping spree:  Black Friday . . . which is now on Thursday. . . . Small business Saturday and of course Cyber Monday.  They are banking on us to shop and to buy and they are prepared with fancy flyers, clever commercials, inventory and staff.  They even know how best to que us up in an orderly way at the check-out registers.  It’s like they were expecting us!
