Winter Olympics have been great fun to watch.  Did you know that Minnesota is the #1 market in the country for watching the Winter Olympics on TV?   It’s kind of sad that it is coming to a close tonight, but it’s been a great winter distraction from . . . well, WINTER!

The athletes who compete are amazing.  Their performances seem at times to defy nature itself – flying and spinning and racing around like the laws of physics don’t apply to them!  Their discipline and commitment to training is impressive, although I sometimes wonder if focusing so intently on one goal is really a good thing for a balanced life.  But that is how you get to the Olympics.

I like to learn new things.  It seems like the older I get the more I am receptive to seeing things in a new way.  And the more important it seems to me to be able to appreciate different perspectives on things.  It is energizing to gain a new insight on something that you always thought was one way, and then discovered it’s really another way.  And it helps us understand others better .  . . and sometimes helps us understand God better . . . There’s nothing more damaging to a young mind and spirit than the negative messages that they hear about themselves.  Psychologists suggest that for every negative message elementary-aged children hear about themselves, they need to hear ten positive ones to restore their sense of self-esteem to where it had been previously. If that ratio is 10 -1 for children, I’m guessing it goes up exponentially for high youth and maybe even higher for adults.

I’m guessing a lot of us will be sitting down to watch the big game today.  I’m also pretty sure there are not a lot of really strong feelings about who wins the Super Bowl today with both teams out west.  No intense rivalries around here that would get anyone too excited.  Still it’s fun to watch.

Richard Sherman from the Seahawks got pretty excited after their NFC Championship game a couple weeks ago.  His post-game interview after their win over the 49ers had a lot of people talking.  It will be interesting to watch how excited he gets today should Seattle win. (more…)
