The first thing we noticed on our recent family trip to Puerto Rico was their hospitality!  “Welcome to the Island!” they said as we stepped off the plane.  And we knew we were in for a wonderful time.  It was as if they were just waiting for us to arrive.  That welcome and hospitality set the tone for our time there. Today we are celebrating Trinity which is a unique celebration in the church year because it does not celebrate an event in the life of Christ but rather a  Christian doctrine or teaching about God.

Something strange and wonderful happened on Pentecost.  It was 50 days after Jesus had risen from the dead – just 10 days after he had ascended into heaven. The disciples were gathered in Jerusalem; Jesus had instructed them to wait there.  They weren’t sure what they were waiting for or what to expect.  Jesus had promised to send them his Holy Spirit, but they didn’t know how he would arrive.  And then it happened – on a Sunday.  People from all over the world were visiting the city for the Jewish festival.  And here’s what happened according to the book of Acts:  “Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”   The crowds who knew nothing of the Spirit or Jesus’ promise, knew something was up!  The Bible says they were bewildered, utterly amazed and perplexed.  Some asked “what does this mean!”  Some simply dismissed them and explained their strange behavior by accusing them of being drunk.  But there’s no doubt that something strange and wonderful was taking place. Do you ever feel like you just want to get away?

 

Many among us are on a get-away even as we speak – traveling or up at the cabin. We’re planning a family vacation in a couple weeks.  Maybe you have some plans to get away from it all this summer . . . have fun.

 

Vacations are good at giving us a temporary escape from the things that keep us so tied down to earth.  Sometimes just going out of town for a day can gift us with a fresh perspective that comes with a little temporary detachment from the regular grind.  (more…)
