The Church year circulates around three major festivals in the church year – three events in the life of Christ: Christmas, Easter and Pentecost. The first sentence of our Gospel today can be easily divided into two messages. One is law and lays out a command. The other is Gospel and offers a promise. “Abide in me.” That’s law. “I abide in you.” That’s Gospel! And that Gospel makes all the difference in understanding what Jesus is saying to us today in this beautiful text from the Gospel of John that is just filled with Gospel promises! (more…)
