We learn about Jesus’ burial from the Gospels . . .how Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea took the body down from the cross, wrapped it in linens and buried it in a tomb Joseph had bought for himself. We learn that the tomb was located in a garden . . . and how the women came there early on Easter morning with spices to anoint this body. All this was done according to Jewish burial laws and customs.

Winter did not want to let us go this year! I mean, come on! We had to CANCEL CHURCH last Sunday because of this last nasty winter blast we suffered! I’m saying “last” wintry blast. I guess there’s no guarantee of that!
But perhaps the lingering winter weather this past week can serve as a metaphor for something happening in our Gospel for today. We find the friends and disciples of Jesus gathering together after Jesus rose from the dead. And the unbelief and the fear will not let them go. It’s just hanging on. Like snow in April.

An Easter sermon is both the easiest thing and the most difficult thing. Easy because, well, come on! It’s the best news ever! There are some biblical texts where the Gospel is hard to find. But not in the Easter texts! It’s all good news! But an Easter sermon is difficult because everyone pretty much knows the story and how it all ends so you’re not telling anyone something they don’t already know! I mean no one is really here this morning wondering what happened to Jesus, right? (more…)
