Dawn and I were looking at old pictures the other day – when our kids were little – trips we took – family gatherings – happy times.  It was a fun experience to spend an afternoon with all our memories, but also bittersweet as we remember how things were and how quickly things change.

This pitcher sat in the hutch in my parent’s dining room.  It’s a strange kitschy item.  And for some reason which for the life of me I cannot remember or understand, I felt at one point that I HAD to have this.  So my mom put my name on the bottom.  And when she moved into her new place, this guy moved into our place.  This is something a lot of people do . . . deciding who gets what and what belongs to whom. We communicate this decision by marking it with our name.

There is a surprising invitation in today’s Gospel reading from Matthew.  It comes to us today in the form of a parable – a story Jesus told.  We have heard several parables from Jesus over the past several weeks that reveal the surprisingly broad reach of God’s grace.  These stories of Jesus tell us how God continues to love us and give of himself and how he continues to call us into his kingdom and how he presses on to demonstrate his grace in spite of rejection.

It feels really good to be back in church today — in this sacred space where we gather for worship.  Even though we have been able to worship together online and in the park and even in our church parking lot, this feels great because this is “home” for so many of us.

God is working in you.  This sentence from the apostle Paul in our Second Reading today reminds us that in all things God is doing something in us – something important — something good — something that draws us to him.  God is working in you to bring purpose and freedom.  And hope and joy and peace.
