I don’t know about you but I feel a lot of pressure when I hear today’s Gospel.

It’s another “end times” story Jesus tells recorded in the Gospel of Matthew about a man who went away and left his servants in charge with different amounts of cash.  The one who had the most took a risk, invested it and realized a profit.  The one who had just a little played it safe, protected the master’s money by burying it and had no gains.

So the message that often comes with this story is:  DON’T BURY YOUR TALENT!  USE IT OR LOSE IT!  And that’s a lot of pressure, don’t you think?

I have a fun fact today related to our Gospel reading parable about the 10 bridesmaids.  Last weekend I attended a wedding that actually had 10 bridesmaids!! TEN!  They had to stand in two rows.  They were lovely girls – my daughter was one of them – some were the brides’ sisters and some were friends.  I don’t believe they were divided by wise and foolish, but the bridesmaids in Jesus’ story were. Before one attends a family reunion or a get together with relatives, it’s always a good idea to review who everyone is.  I remember my mom doing this with me when I was little.  And I’ve done the same with my kids.  “You remember Uncle Fred?  Aunt Irene?”  “I think so . . . who are they again?”  I think we always assume the next generation knows and remembers more than they do.  So we have to sketch out a little family tree, connect the branches and try to retrieve names and understand the relationships.
