Apparently, 1 our of every 14 Americans has reported losing a friendship because of the 2016 election.  Our nation is so divided and this election has brought out the worst – not just in the candidates but in everyone!  You could see it on stage during the debate this past week, but then for a couple hours afterwards you saw the same divisive dynamic as the pundits and commentators duked it out.  Rolling their eyes . . .sighing . . .interrupting each other.  Doing exactly what the candidates are doing.  And now it seems it is trickling down to personal relationships . . .

The estimated cost of the damage done by Hurricane Matthew in the US is about $10 billion.  Staggering figures, but expects predict that the actual long term economic impact will be minimal.  Businesses will certainly suffer and restoration will take time. But insurance companies will probably cover most of that.  And rebuilding efforts will offset many losses.  Of course, nothing can replace the loss of human life.  And 38 Americans died as a result of this storm.

Pentecost 19, 2016

I heard this piece of advice once and I have never forgotten it:  “Don’t boo.  Even the referee is someone’s son.”   Think about that!  Oh sure, the ref can make some bad calls that can really infuriate you in the heat of the game.  You might be tempted to call him names and voice your displeasure.  But don’t boo him.  Because that guy is a PERSON.  He is someone who is LOVED.  He is SOMEONE’S SON.

I’m gonna be really honest with you about something.

 

Some of the Gospel readings from Luke that we have had for the last several weeks have been really hard to preach on.  I like to preach on Jesus calming storms, healing people or feeding people or forgiving and welcoming people.  It’s so easy!  But lately in our Gospels, Jesus lays out some pretty impossible expectations on his disciples.  And preaching on these is NOT easy.
