There are two different kinds of sinners.  Both are featured in our Scripture readings for today.  And we are, each of us, one or the other at any given time.

 

A SECURE SINNER is one who does not see his sin.   A BROKEN SINNER is one who sees nothing but his sin.  A secure sinner is one who thinks all is well – no problems, no needs.   A secure sinner is either blind to his faults or simply ignoring them.  The secure sinner is content with himself – proud of himself.   He feels his life is blameless.  He has good moral grounding.  The only thing he might need Jesus for is to prop up his own feelings of self-worth and maybe lend him a hand once in a while.  But basically, he is fine as is.

The other day on the evening news, I watched a montage of graduation speeches from across the country.  It was quite moving.  I was impressed by the caliber of speakers who are called on to share words of wisdom with our nation’s college graduates – including the president and first lady, Mitt Romney and a whole bunch of people who have accomplished a lot and have a lot to say.  And from I could tell, they did a pretty good job.  Some of emotional, some humorous; all intended to inspire.  At Hannah’s graduation a couple weeks ago, we heard from Arne Sorenson the CEO of Marriott International.  He told the Luther graduates to “be bold.”
